My Dad. Most of you know that he was my hero. Most of you don't know the whole story though. I can't sleep tonight, so tonight is the night I will share "the rest of the story..."

My dad married my mom on January 13, 1979. I was 8 years old. Not too many men would be willing to take on a single mom with 3 children, but my dad did. He had loved my mom for years. He was stationed in the PI at the time, so he flew my mom over there, and married her. She came home without him, but with a ring on her finger and a smile on her face I hadn't seen in a very long time.

I remember when dad came home for the first time after they got married. He sat us girls down at the table and said, "I'm your dad now. Your mom comes first. You girls come second. That's the way it is." I don't really remember anything after "I'm your dad now." I was young, but I knew I wanted a dad that I could love, look up to, and be cared for without being abused. I was so happy to have dad come in to the family.

Dad got stationed in San Diego, and while I was excited to move to a new place, I was not excited to leave my sissy. The worst part about moving was moving away from my protector. Sissy (most of you know her as Carmen), had a huge hand in raising me up to that point. With mom being a single mom, she had to work a lot. Sissy would come home after school, pick me up, and take me to her track practices or meets. She would take me on dates with her. I was pretty much never without her. And when I was without her, it was scary. So moving away from her was devastating for us both. We survived, but it was hard. When we got down to San Diego, my dad put me on his lap and said, "I know you miss your sissy. But she will come visit when she can, and you can go visit her when you can. Just because she doesn't live with us anymore doesn't change anything. She still loves you more than anything, and you will always have her." I loved that he understood how I was feeling.

Dad set my room up just like a princess room. It was the first time I had my own room. He bought me a pink canopy bed, with a matching white dresser and white vanity. I just knew I was a princess now.

One of the best days of my life was the day my dad adopted me. At that point in time, I didn't know what he had to go through to get the "sperm donor" (how I refer to my biological father) to agree to relinquish his parental rights. All I knew is that on that day, I was changing my name from Ketcham to Sasso, and I was so happy to become a Sasso. It meant that I REALLY belonged to dad now. Legally. Dad had bought me a beautiful yellow gingham dress; it was long and had a white apron overlay with Raggedy Ann and Andy on it. I remember the night before the adoption, my mom rolled my hair in sponge rollers and the next day when I put on the dress, and my hair was curled...I was truly a princess. And my prince was about to become my dad legally. After the ceremony was over, my dad put a gold bracelet on my wrist. It said "Princess" and I always remained his princess.

My dad was strict. He was a typical Navy man. He demanded obedience, and he held high standards. The whole time I was growing up, dad would wake me on Saturday mornings by stripping my bed...while I was still in it! Saturday was house cleaning day, and no one did anything until the chores were complete. I had a curfew and it didn't matter what the circumstance was, that curfew was unbendable. His rule was "1 week for every minute you are late." It only took me being late 1 time to realize he didn't mess around. I was 6 minutes late coming home from Disneyland. Yes, I served 6 weeks of grounding. When I asked him why it was so important that I not be late, I'll never forget what he told me. "Cindy, when you are late, it tells others that YOUR time is more valuable than THEIR time. That is unacceptable. Every person's time is valuable, and yours is no more valuable than their time. So don't be late. Ever." Lesson learned.

When Brian asked me to marry him, my dad had been retired from the Navy for several years. He went on a diet THAT day to ensure that he would fit in his uniform again, because he knew that I wanted him to wear his dress white uniform. Every single milestone, my dad was there. Every insecurity I had, my dad laid to rest. I could pick up the phone at any time and dad was there.

When I was pregnant with Shawn, Brian and I realized that Brian would be deployed when I delivered. We sat and talked about our options. I could stay in North Carolina or I could go home to mom and dad. That was a no brainer. Go home. Next question. Who to be my coach? Carmen was the obvious answer, but Carmen didn't live in the same area. Next obvious answer? My dad. Some people think, "wow, that's really weird to have your dad be your labor coach!" It wasn't. For me, it was a natural choice. Dad didn't agree easily though! When I asked him, at first his answer was a very fast "NO! Ask your mom or your sister!" Well, I wanted my mom to take pictures for Brian. I knew my sissy would try to get there in time, and if she did then she could help, but she couldn't go to Lamaze classes with me, and if she didn't make it in time, then I was screwed. The night I asked dad and he said no, he called me back about an hour later. "Cindy, why do you want ME to be your coach," he asked. My response was simple. "Dad, I've never had a baby, and you've never had a baby. It's a first for both of us. You're my dad, and I want you to share this with me." He agreed. He thought it would be so awkward going through the Lamaze classes. Our very first class, when we walked in, he announced (very loudly) to the whole room, "I'm her DAD! I'm just filling in for her husband who is a Marine on deployment!" Everyone chuckled and it broke the ice for friendships to be formed. When Shawn made his entry into the would, dad was right there, guiding me. My mom was taking pictures, and my sissy was at the end of the bed ensuring the doctor knew what he was doing (until the episiotomy, when she turned several shades of green!) My dad cut the umbilical cord, and my dad sent Brian his message announcing that he was a daddy now too. Shawn and my dad have been incredibly close, ever since.

Through weight gain and loss, through quitting smoking, through going back to school...my dad has always been my biggest cheerleader. I never wondered if he regretted not having his own "real" children, because I absolutely WAS his "real" child. I never wondered if he wished he had a son, either. He made me feel like I was the most important child.

Most of my friends from high school up to know came to know my dad as "dad." Very few of my friends called him Rick or Rich. Just "dad."

My dad loved playing on the computer. One of his greatest joys was beating my weekly score at Bejeweled. When the game resets tomorrow, I'm going to cry because I know my dad won't beat me this week.

My dad loved playing Words with Friends. He tried so hard to beat me at that game. Every once in awhile he would. We have two games going right now. I'm winning one and he's winning one. I'm going to cry when they time out and I win them both by default.

My dad was counting down to his retirement date in February. He had such wonderful plans for him and my mom. The first thing they were going to do was take a road trip, all the way up to Canada and visit friends all along the way. My heart hurts that he won't be doing that now.

Every girl should grow up knowing that no matter what happens in life her dad will be there. My dad was my everything. He taught me so much, and I feel like I wasn't finished learning from him. I never thought about life without my dad. I never thought I would be sitting here wondering....so many things. Why didn't I ask him this or that? I know that God never makes mistakes, so I know that dad leaving us was the right time. It doesn't mean I have to like it, or even agree with it, but I do trust that my God knows what He is doing. I hurt. I hurt seeing my mom hurt. I hurt seeing my children hurt. They were so close to their Bopa. He has been such a huge part of their life, and for that I am so grateful. Most military brats don't have that luxury. Most grandparents live across the country. Our lives were so blessed by my dad.

We spent Thanksgiving together, and it was such a lovely day. Although my mom was in the hospital, we all took turns rotating in and out of the hospital so that mom wasn't alone. Alyssa and dad went to the hospital first that day, and they had some special time together, just laughing and being silly. Then Shawn and dad had their normal goof off time together. At the end of the meal, dad thanked me for making Thanksgiving dinner...something I didn't usually have to do alone, because mom is always at my side. Dad was sad to not have mom's homemade pumpkin pie, but he didn't complain about the store-bought pie.

Brian lost his best friend. My dad and Brian have been friends since Brian was 18 years old. He is now 48. My dad took him in, mentored him, loved him, and befriended him. The razzed each other incessantly. I'm not sure who got more enjoyment out of it. It was Brian who called 911, and it was Brian who made it to my mom first. It is Brian who is, at this very moment, continuing to make my dad proud by being my rock. I always knew my dad was happy with the choice in husband I made, but I know he is looking down proudly at Brian saying "That's my son-in-law!" Their "favorite" past time was cleaning Brian's garage. I can't tell you how many times my dad has helped Brian do the garage. Brian said last night through tears, that he won't be able to clean the garage anymore. It just won't be the same.

My mom, my sister, my husband, and my children and I all are clinging to each other, lost at sea without dad here. We'll muddle through, but it won't be easy, and it won't be pleasant. My heart hurts so badly. To say that I am brokenhearted would be a huge understatement, in fact. I not only lost my dad. I lost my hero. Every girl should have a dad like mine. He truly was the epitome of what a dad should be. I know he was proud of me. I know he was proud of my sister. We could do no wrong in his eyes. My prayer now is that I continue to make him proud in my life, and to raise our children in a manner that would make him proud.

I love you, dad. I'm not ready to say goodbye to you quite yet though. Maybe by the time we do the memorial, I will be, but I need a few more days....

We were so blessed to host an exchange student from France. Pierre came to us for three weeks, and he was an absolute joy to have around! He was eager to do all things American, and never said no to trying anything. He and Shawn became fast friends, and Pierre, having a little sister Alyssa's age, quickly became another big brother to Alyssa. We enjoyed having him so much that we are now seeking other opportunities to host exchange students!

Pierre had never been to a baseball game before, so we couldn't let him leave without taking him to see the Padres in action! We rode the train down so that we didn't have to deal with rush hour traffic, and it enabled us to just enjoy the evening!

A strange happening...

A couple of weeks ago Brian and I went to a Change of Command of a dear friend of ours. LtCol. Pete Farnum was relinquishing command of his unit. That morning, as I was getting ready, Brian began to iron a pair of slacks to wear. Odd. Strange to think he'll be going to this COC in civilian clothes. I asked him if it felt weird, and he said it did. He had to shave that morning as well; something he has really enjoyed NOT having to do since he has been retired.

We get to area on base where they are holding the ceremony. We stand around chatting with Marines that we know, and then find our seats. I got to spend a few minutes with Cindy Farnum, who I dearly love, and she showed us to our seats. MGYSGT Burlingame (Ret). Wow. Wow. I kind of smiled to myself.

During the ceremony, there were other little things that struck me as different now that Brian is retired. For example, to see him with his hand over his heart instead of standing at attention when the flag passed...that was different. To be able to walk away and hold his hand as we were walking...that was different. These aren't bad. Just observations of things I noticed.

I think I like this retired stuff.

At the beginning of her freshman year, Alyssa asked if she could join the cheer team. However, she also wanted to do choir and play production. So we told her if she kept her grades up doing choir and PP, then her sophomore year we would let her add in cheer. Well, she kept up her end of the bargain, so we had to keep ours. She tried out for the cheer team, made it, and headed off to cheer camp with the rest of the team. The last day was a competition, and the families were invited to come watch.

Retirement Ceremony

I can't tell you how long I have been waiting for Brian to retire. I was ready at about the time he hit 22 years. I thought for certain by the time he hit 25 years, we'd be retired. However, my husband, ever the Marine, did all thirty years.

No one can prepare you for the period before retirement. You "hear" what others are saying, but until you experience it for yourself, there is just no way to imagine the stress, the paperwork, the decisions, and well...more stress. This is coming from a woman who handles stress pretty darn well, if I do say so myself. Having survived 4 deployments in a 3 year time frame (with 2 teenagers) gives me license to say that.

However, on the day of the retirement ceremony, all that is forgotten. Watching my husband stand up and receive his final award, and hear his final dismissal, the pride I felt was evident. Brian served THIRTY YEARS in the Marine Corps. He has survived things most can never fathom. He has the most impeccable work ethic and level of integrity I have ever seen in a man. As he stood, giving his final salute, all I could think of was...thank you, God. Thank you for giving ME such an amazing gift in a husband. There is no where else I would rather be, than walking along side THIS man. Brian's retirement ceremony was BEAUTIFUL. It was full of patriotism and full of emotion. It was meaningful, and an incredible way to end a 30 year career. I must say thank you to Kevin (MGySgt. Eckhoff) who worked tirelessly to make it happen flawlessly.

It was a wonderful ceremony, and there are so many people to thank that I am afraid I may forget some. If I do, please know that you aren't forgotten...We couldn't have gotten through this time period without the help of SO many. My mom and dad, especially, who have supported us tirelessly through the years, helping whenever and where ever we needed them. Betty, Gordon, Sue & Pete, and Lianne & Jeff, whose presence at the retirement meant more to Brian than they will ever know. My sister, who came out early to help me do last minute things around the house and ended up helping Brian landscape the entire back yard! Shaela and Eldon for getting the cake and bringing it all the way from 29 Palms. Christi, Tori and Cynthia who helped cook for the party at the house. My tiara's, who prayed for me incessantly. My prayer partner and best friend, Gayelee, who has spent more hours in prayer with me and for me than any other person I know. The Marines, who gave their time to help with the ceremony and reception. And finally, Kevin, who again...did such a beautiful job with the retirement ceremony and an INCREDIBLE job on the shadowbox he gave Brian. It is a gift Brian will treasure the rest of his life. He was truly speechless. We have been blessed with amazing friends and you all are a gift we don't take lightly. Thank you so much~

Florida Wedding

I flew to Florida for the wedding of the Daughter of my Heart (DOMH), Devyn. She married her best friend, Greg, in a beautiful ceremony. I was so blessed to be there, to be a part of the preparation and to be able to participate in the ceremony.

Before the wedding a bunch of the girls + Kevin (Devyn's best friend) went to a piano bar at Disney. It was a great time.

An added bonus is that Tawdra and I got to see two old friends who came to the wedding from Canada. It was so great to be able to catch up with Lyn and Anne-Marie!

If you know me, then you know that I really have more than two children. I have a plethora of spiritual children. Well, I was honored to see two of my girls graduate this year. If you have been following my blog at all, then the faces below you already know. Morgan and Katee both graduated from Rancho Buena Vista High School. I am so proud of them both, and so tickled that they got to walk together. Nothing beats walking with your best friend.

Face of an angel...or devil?

Those of you who are friends with me on Facebook know that Harley is one of the most photographed dogs in America! He truly is my little angel baby. I ADORE this dog. He has more personality in one little shake of his tail than most dogs have in their entire body. However, my dad calls Harley the devil because he is into EVERYTHING and just LOOKS for trouble to get into. Angel or Devil...he is still the most adorable dog on the planet!

The pictures above tell quite the story! 30 years of Marine Corps service, and the transition slowly begins to a new career.

Brian attended his last retirement seminar last week. It was, by far, the best he has been to as far as preparing him for what to expect on the outside. It was also quite an eye opener for us as for how spoiled we have been with Brian wearing uniforms. This seminar recommended he spend NO LESS than $800.00 for a complete suit. $800.00?? SERIOUSLY?? Holy cow...my entire closet doesn't total $800.00!!

We are learning quite a bit about how different life truly is outside the Marine Corps. I'm very happy we moved off base when we did. I'm not sure my heart could have withstood the shock of learning all we are learning in addition to the shock of a water and electric bill! Brian and I have discussed numerous times whether or not we should buy a house here. I know this is a buyers market, but both of us really struggle with paying upwards of $300,000 for a house with NO land. I am so thankful we took the time to rent before we purchase. We are learning quite a bit about what we do and don't want in a house. First and foremost, we do NOT want to deal with having a HOA. (Home-owners association) Unfortunately, the majority of properties where we would choose to live have HOA's. We have learned that while hard wood floors are indeed, beautiful, they are a nightmare when you have dogs. Finally, while a sun room is lovely in theory, it is a nightmare in reality. During the winter the bottom half of the house stays freezing cold, and during the summer it stays boiling hot. One final thought that stays with us constantly is that we really don't even want to stay in California. We will, of course, stay here until after Alyssa graduates from high school, but after that, we just don't have any desire to stay here. The cost of living is insane.

All in all this is quite a learning experience. Brian is narrowing down what it is he would like to do for his next career. He has several networking contacts, and a strong idea of the direction he would like to pursue. He is about 7 classes from graduating with his Bachelor's Degree, and I am so proud of how hard he has worked. He has been simply amazing, juggling the Marine Corps, school and all of us and our crazy lives. I definitely married quite an amazing man!

We only get to go once or twice a year, but when we do manage it, we always have a wonderful time. Yes, I'm talking about heading out to 29 Palms. The weather was perfect...chilly in the morning, a nice breeze during the day and freezing at night! We all had a great time!

Thoughts....

I just returned home from a women's retreat. The title of the retreat was "Thirsty" and it was such an amazing weekend. Of course, anytime you are sitting in the presence of God, it is amazing. However, this time, there was just something different. During the Saturday morning session, there were different prayer stations set up. It was completely silent in the room, with the exception of the sound of trickling water from one of the display fountains. Women were all over the room, each in their own little world, just them and God. One of the stations was called "reflections" and it was the station that most spoke to me. At this station there was a mirror. You were supposed to look in the mirror and see yourself, then see yourself as God sees you. WOW. Talk about powerful. When I compare how I see myself to how God sees me, the dichotomy blows my mind. The longer I sat and reflected on it, the more I began to see me as God wants me to see myself. As the strong, amazing, God loving woman he intended me to be.

I needed this weekend. I didn't realize how much I needed it until that moment. I didn't realize how the pressures of all the changes we have going on in our lives had been weighing on me. As I sat there, in my own little world, I was so incredibly thankful. Thankful for God giving me the most incredible man on the planet to be my husband. Does he drive me crazy? Sometimes. Do we get on each others nerves? Occasionally. Can I drive him batty like no one else? Absolutely. However, I realized that God created this man for ME. No one else on the planet would have the patience to deal with my little idiosyncrasies. Not too many men see when their wife needs a weekend to go off to support her best friend and spend time with God, either. I'm thankful that Brian sees how those moments away for me refresh me.

I am incredibly blessed.

The end of soccer season

The end of the soccer season is always a bit depressing for me. We all know how much I love watching Shawn play. His team finished undefeated this year, 10-0, and Shawn allowed ZERO goals! The only goalie to accomplish that this season! Yes, I am a proud mama!

The Marine Corps' 235th Birthday Ball was our last...at least, it was Brian's last as an active duty Marine. That made it bittersweet. It was a wonderful ball; one of the best I can remember.

For as long as we have been homeschooling, we have always kicked off our year with a "NOT back to school" breakfast. Well, this year, with Alyssa going back to school, has been a bit different for us. We just were NOT able to coordinate our schedule to do breakfast. So, on the first day of school, Shawn headed to work with dad!

The 1st Marine Division had some very special guests from Australia. The Division was honoring Major Martin Clemmens, and his daughter and her son came to accept the honor. Shawn went in with dad and was able to spend the day with the Clemmens. It was a great way to spend the first day of school!

Laundry

A couple of months ago, our dryer died a very sad, tragic death. We knew it was coming, so it wasn't a shock, but mourning ensued on my part. It lived a long, 15 year life, and was time to move on. That leaves us....dryer-less. Brian and I agreed that we wouldn't purchase a new dryer unless we could pay cash for it. Dryer's aren't THAT expensive, so I figured two months, tops and I'd have a shiny new dryer in its place.

Well, life being what it is, expenses have come up that we hadn't anticipated. You know the old adage, "when it rains, it pours." Yep...it is true!

Anyway, I digress. Brian rigged a clothes line in the back yard, and I have been enjoying hanging my laundry on the line...something I haven't done in many years. I forgot how much I enjoy the smell of hung laundry.

The only downside to the line is...time. It isn't very conducive to a very busy family of four. So, yesterday I did all the laundry in the house...about 10 loads, loaded up the Bronco, and headed to the local coin laundry. As I was sitting there watching my clothes dry, something hit me. I don't mind the laundry mat. At all. In fact, I find it rather stimulating. You can learn a lot about people doing their laundry. It is actually a pretty intimate act...doing laundry with strangers! For example, there was a young man next to I decided to make a study of. He was Hispanic, and had I run into him at night, I would have been a little frightened. He had very large biceps, and both arms were covered in some pretty gnarly tattoos. As I watched him out of the corner of my eye, though, I learned several things. For one, he probably lived alone, because he was doing only HIS laundry. No female clothing and no children's clothing. He wears boxers, and liked printed boxers over plain ones. He preferred graphic, rude tshirts, but was actually quite a softy if his sleeping attire was any indication. He likes sleep pants with cartoon characters. He had Spongebob Squarepants, Scooby-Doo, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It just goes to show you that you really can't judge a book by its cover.

I don't know when I'll be able to get in a new dryer. In the meant time, I'll make the most out of people watching at the laundry mat!

First day of high school

As hard as it is to believe, our little Alyssa started high school. And for those who aren't aware, she entered back into the public school system for the first time since she was in 1st grade.

She had a fantastic first day, and is loving school.

A note to those NOT so subtle comments from a few fellow homeschoolers. No, we did NOT throw our daughter in with the sharks. No, we did not "sell out" or "give up" by putting her back in school. Homeschooling is a decision we made year to year based on what is best for our children. Alyssa, who is a much different child from Shawn, is exactly where she is supposed to be for high school. Shawn, (who continues to homeschool) is exactly where he is supposed to be for high school. The decision to allow Alyssa to go to school was not made lightly, nor was it made in haste. It was made with her best interests at heart. I have no doubt that we have trained her and taught her well, and I have no doubt she is very well grounded in knowing WHO she is. So please...do me a favor and stop trying to convince me that we have made a mistake or that she will be begging to come home within a month. We didn't make a mistake, and she is thriving exactly where she is at. IF the time should come (which I highly doubt) that Alyssa DOES want to come back home, then we will cross that bridge when the time comes. Thank you for your concern.

Yes, you heard it correctly! We have a retirement date! As of September 1, 2011 MGySgt Burlingame will retire with 30 years of service.

We are very excited to transition to this next phase of life. Quite nervous and a little bit apprehensive as well. However, I have no doubt that no matter WHAT my incredible husband does next, that he will be as successful at it as he has been in the Marine Corps.

We will be having his retirement ceremony in June of 2011, before he goes on terminal leave. So, keep that in mind, because we are going to have one heck of a party!

Random thoughts of the exhausted...

I should know better than to blog when I am tired. However, my body is tired, but my brain is not I figure I'll write and ramble for a bit, and perhaps that just may wear our my little pea brain.

Nana and I took Alyssa shopping tonight for school clothes. I can't quite contain my shock at the fact that my baby girl is going to high school. I truly do not feel old enough to have two children in high school. Yet there we were, watching her model outfit after outfit. She has her own eclectic sense of style that I just love. She doesn't care what other people think. As long as she likes it and feels good in it, that is what matters. Must be the homeschooler in her.

We have started getting emails and paperwork from the school, and I'll admit...it is a bit overwhelming. It has been so long since we have been in the "school" frame of mind. This may take some getting used to. Already I am trying to juggle what time she starts school and what time she gets out of school. My worst nightmare is that I forget to pick her up from school because that is just not something I am accustomed to having to do! Thank God Shawn can drive now! I'll depend on him to help me remember these things!

Speaking of Shawn, he went to youth camp and came home a totally changed child. God clearly did an amazing work while they were up there. The stories the kids came home with were nothing short of amazing, and the stories Shawn himself told were incredible. Of course, the proof is in his attitude. I am so proud of him. It seems as though both kids are finding their groove again in the new youth group. After the heartache they went through with the church split, I was becoming very concerned that their walk with Christ might never get back on track. But God is so good, and His timing is always right.

Brian is working hard at juggling his schoolwork and family and the Corps. He just changed his major, which will set him back a couple of classes, but I think his new major is much more up his alley. Instructional design is his new major.

I am back on track with my classes as well, after taking an 8 week break to get us adjusted to daddy being home again and moving. This quarter I am only taking one class, but after that I am overloading by taking three classes. Crazy I know, but I have an amazing family and I know they will help pick up the slack. Since deciding that I want to go ahead and go directly to getting my Masters after my BS, I am seriously focused on staying on track.

I think that updates you all on exactly where each of the Burlingame's are at now!

Reflections

Brian and I were sitting at the table tonight having dinner. Alone. It seems these days we are alone more often then we have been since we had children. I know this is a preview of what is to come. I must say though, it is quite strange to have it just be the two of us so much! Don't get me wrong, I love having Brian all to myself. Especially since him being home is still relatively new to us. It is just a strange feeling knowing my children are at that age where they are now off doing their own thing. Shawn is at camp. I know he is having an amazing time. Alyssa is spending the night with a friend. I know she is having a blast. I also know that as time continues to progress, Brian and I will be spending many more nights alone as the children spread their wings and begin to fly. All I can say is thank you, God, that my husband and I are still best friends after 20 years of marriage. I can't imagine how lonely it would be without him by my side.

What makes me smile

The best part of our move to Oceanside has been our ability to spend more time with our friends. We have had non-stop teenagers at the house. The money I have saved on gas I am more than spending on food. I love every minute of it. I know these moments are fleeting, and once I blink they will all be off to college and on to their adult lives. These are a few of the faces that can always, without fail, make me smile.

My husband can ALWAYS put a smile on my face. Even when I am ready to strangle him, he'll pop off with some comment and that grin, and I can't be mad at him anymore. LOL!

It is hard for me to believe, but my little girl finished 8th grade this year. She wrapped up her year by attending the 8th grade dance with friends. She had a fantastic time, and is more than ready to move on to high school. Mom...she's not quite so ready.

People keep asking me to post pictures of the house we moved into. I have taken a few, but not of each room, so here is what I do have.

Another question I keep getting is why did we decide to rent instead of buy. There are a couple of reasons. First, Brian and I aren't sure that we really plan on staying in California long term. Although both of our children want to stay here, he and I really would prefer to retire in the mid-west. To get any sort of return on the investment of buying a house in Ca, you really need to own it at least 10 years. Another reason is because both of us have a difficult time swallowing the fact that we would pay $400,000 dollars for a house. Especially knowing we could move mid-west and spend 1/2 that and get twice the land! So, we'll keep you posted if we change our mind on buying. In the meantime, we'll just continue to pay the mortgage for someone else! LOL!

I should take a moment to publicly thank a few people who helped us move. My dad (who put up with more crap than any person on the planet should have to), Tyler, Shawn, Billy, John, and all the kids...you guys ROCK. We could not have made this move as smoothly without out. Okay, maybe it wasn't quite so smooth...and I know Brian has scarred Tyler for life, but one day, we will make it up to you! You heard Brian say it...next time, he will HIRE a moving company! LOL!

Time does fly, there is no doubt about it. Shawn's best friend and our 2nd son graduated from high school this year. In the next couple of weeks he will be leaving us and venturing off to college.

The friendship Shawn and Tyler have had has been such a blessing. I love watching them and listening to them. I love knowing that they have each other to lean on, and they know that no matter what, they will always be friends.

What does it mean to be resilient?

People always say to me, "You are so strong" or "I could never live the life you do, with your husband gone all the time." The truth is, I can honestly say, it is only by the grace of God that I have survived these last 4 years. I never wanted to be a single parent, much less a single parent of teenagers. Yet, here I am.

What does it mean to be resilient? Well, dictionary.com says the definition of resilient is recovering readily from illness, depression, adversity, or the like; buoyant. To understand what it is to be resilient, all I have to do is look into the faces of my children.

To have a daddy who has just left for his 4th deployment in 3 1/2 years....and those children get up every morning with a smile on their faces....THAT is what it is to be resilient. When Alyssa is looking for daddy to tell her she is the most beautiful princess on the planet, and then her face lights up because an email from her daddy said exactly that....THAT is being resilient. When Shawn is about to blow because he can't take much more estrogen, but he chooses to go kick a soccer ball instead of lashing out at his sister or mom...THAT is being resilient. I have learned so much from my children during these last 4 years. I have learned so much from my husband, as well. People think *I* have it rough. NOT. Yes, he is the one who signed the paperwork, and he is the one who LOVES being a Marine. But it isn't easy for him to leave his family. It isn't easy knowing he has missed every piano recital since Alyssa started playing. Missed every soccer season Shawn has played the last 4 years. Lived in 130 degree heat, going without simple pleasures that we all take for granted. He never complains. He never stops smiling. He never forgets to end an email with, "I am so proud of you babe, you are doing such a great job." He is my inspiration.

For Christmas, we went to my sister Carmen's house in Arizona. It was the first time we had ALL been together in.....well, MANY years! It was so much fun!

Well, we were doing family pictures, as we always do when we get together. Mark insisted he wanted a shot of all the girls on the couch, instead of in front of the tree. So we humor him. BIG MISTAKE. BIG BIG BIG MISTAKE! They NAILED us....each guy had TWO cans of silly string...and they got us GOOD!

Brian and I decided this was the year we wanted to take the kids to the Marine Corps ball. So the day after we got to Greenville, we took the kids to the ball, then the following day, Alyssa and I flew back home and Shawn and Brian started driving across the country.

Time Share Get-Away

We spent 3 days at a time share in New Bern getting reacquainted as a family. We had SUCH a great time, and New Bern is a special place for Brian and I. It's where we lived when we were first married, so we enjoyed pointing things out to the kids, and seeing how much it had grown in 20 years!

Old Friends Visit...

While we were in North Carolina for Brian's homecoming, our friends, the Simpson family, drove up from Georgia to spend a few days with us. It worked out PERFECT...while Brian was trying to acclimate back to our time zone, the kids and I had friends to spend the time with! It was so great to see them again!

To everyone I appreciate all of the thanks and prayers for my safe return back to the United States. I am grateful for all of the family and friends who have played such a vital role in the life of my family while I have been half way around the world. All of you are priceless!

I can tell you that even though you won't see it on the news that the Al Anbar Province where many Service Members have made the ultimate sacrifice with their blood has significantly improved in its quality of life for it's people! We started with approximately 30 coalition force positions and reduced them to 3 in 10 months. We opened numerous schools for Iraqi children and provided 100,000 people with water and built many water treatment plants!

Our time as a family over the last week has been AWESOME!!! We have seen friends and visited a few sites in New Bern, NC. I will be disappointed to be separated from them again as of tomorrow but soon we will be back together for good.

For those of you who may not know I will take the position of the Deputy Director of the SNCO Academy in Camp Pendleton, CA. I will spend my last 20 months or so in the Marine Corps in this billet, and upon completion of this tour I will be at my 30 years of service and will be ready to move to the next phase of my life, what ever that brings. It will be amazing to look back and realize from 17-48 I will have served this country as a United States Marine!

One thing I know for sure is that on 1 June 2014 myself and my good friend Adam Walker will go to Maine and begin our life changing adventure of attempting to earn the title as "south bounder thru hikers" as we will step off on our 5-6 month trek of the Appalachian Trail which will take us from Maine to Georgia across 14 states, 8 National Parks and 8 National Forests! It will simply take us 5,000,000 steps and the walking of 2,174 miles! I can' wait!

Soon it will be time for Cindy, I and the kids to attend the 234th MC Ball! It will be an experience that the kids will always remember but more importantly to me something they have earned through all of their sacrifices in supporting me throughout my career! The day after the ball, Cindy and Alyssa will fly back to California, while Shawn and I head out for the 3,000 mile drive across the country. I am looking forward to having that time with Shawn. I have the greatest family in the world!!!

We knew Brian would be getting in during the night. His flight was due to land at 0130, so that put him in to Camp Lejuene at 0330. Knowing we would have a long night, the kids and I laid down and took a nap!

Old Friends...

When we got to North Carolina, my friend Tammi picked us up at the airport. Tammi's family lived next door to us when we lived in Virginia, and we all became great friends. We stayed with their family the first few days we were in North Carolina, and had a GREAT time!

North Carolina Bound!

The day that we have waited for for soooo long finally got here! The kids and I flew to North Carolina for Brian's homecoming from Iraq.

On the flight from San Diego to Dulles, Shawn and I crashed for part of the flight, and Alyssa and I goofed off the rest of the flight!

NOT back to school

Our first day back to school is usually kicked off with a "NOT back to school" breakfast at IHOP. This year, we decided to go to Mimis Cafe, instead. We also had some great homeschooling friends join us this year!

I met Brian's mom, Betty, in Las Vegas for a night. She was there with Gordon, a long time family friend. It was SO great to see them both! We had a fantastic time, too!

Before the girls left, we took them to Knotts Berry Farm. Shawn was determined to get Haley on a roller coaster...or two...or three. Even though she HATES roller coasters, she was quite the trooper, and the kids had a GREAT time!

The first roller coaster of the day...Ghostrider. It is AWFUL! I hate that ride! It scares the pee outta me!!!

Summer Camp at Calicinto Ranch

For our youth group summer camp, our kids went to Calicinto Ranch.

They worked their little behinds off...serving. It was wonderful to see! The camp is actually attended by children who have parents in prison. The age range was 8-11 years old, and our kids did everything from play with the kids, serve meals, clean up, lead horses, help with arts and crafts....whatever needed to be done, our kids did. They had a great time, and grew attached to many of the kids.

This was cool. They had two police officers come out to talk to the kids. One of them brought his dog and showed them how the dog obeys commands. The kids got to ask questions of each of the officers as well.

Our kids worked hard, and they were rewarded by Pastor Don taking them out for an early morning ride 2 mornings. This is Alyssa on Faith, and Pastor Don bowing as he goes by.

It was such an amazing camp, and I am so proud of how hard all our youth worked! They all said they'd go back in a heartbeat to do it again, too!
